In collaboration with the National American Association of University Professors, we have developed the following services for active chapters:

Upholding the standards and ideals of the profession

Motivation and Goals:

The principles and standards of our profession, that have been set forth and defended by the American Association of University Professors for nearly a century, are under attack. Our best defense in times of trouble lies in developing strong local AAUP chapters as effective faculty advocacy organizations. The Chapter Service Program is designed to assist local chapters:

  • to defend academic freedom and tenure
  • to empower faculty in campus governance
  • to increase the economic and professional status of all faculty
  • to improve institutional performance

 

Academic Governance Services

  • Review faculty handbooks to determine agreement with national standards.
  • Advise chapter and faculty governance leaders regarding issues of academic policy.
  • Assist in developing strategies to strengthen the faculty role in academic governance.
  • Counsel local faculty in evaluation of current administrators and potential administrative appointees.

 

Academic Freedom Services

  • Train faculty in matters of academic due process and in development of acceptable faculty personnel procedures.
  • Provide training and assistance in counseling and advocacy for faculty grievants.
  • Provide external observers at faculty hearings.
  • Help establish and counsel chapter academic freedom committees. (Committee A)

 

Financial Analysis Services

  • Assistance in securing official autdit reports or IRS forms 990 for your institution.
  • Comprehensive analysis of university and college finances
  • Consultation in effective use of institutional financial analysis.
  • Analysis of "administrative bloat" and comparison of administration spending behaviour with that of peer institutions.
  • Comparison of faculty salaries with those of peer institutions.
  • Assistance in evaluating equity of salary distribution.
  • Analysis and assistance in design of employee benefit plans.

 

Institutional Performance Evaluations

  • Advise chapter and faculty governance leaders on evaluation of: student graduation rates
  • support of research

 

Media Relations Services

  • Assist in developing media relations campaigns
  • Training in dealing with the press
  • Maintaining a list of media contacts
  • Developing and production of chapter radio spots.
  • Assistance in development and production of chapter newsletters.

 

Meet and Confer Services

  • A number of chapters in Arizona engage in meet-and-confer faculty representation. The Arizona Faculty Association - AAUP, in partnership with the National AAUP, provides a comprehensive range of bargaining support services to make faculty effective in representing their professional interests.

 

Other Services

  • Chapter leadership training
  • Advice and assistance in chapter organization and membership development.
  • Speakers and consultants with expertise in a wide range of higher education issues.
