Salaries at the three Arizona public universities, as shown in the graph, have continued to lag behind salaries for faculty at their peer institutions. The dashed line in the graph indicates the 100 percent level for the average salary of all peers for the UA, the main campus of ASU, and for NAU. The peer institutions are those listed on the Arizona Board of Regents’ web site. Since 1986, salaries at the UA, the main campus of ASU, and at NAU have remained below their peer averages. For the past eight years, in particular, salaries, averaged over all ranks of full time instructional (at least 50% time teaching) faculty, remained at about 92 percent of their peers’ average at ASU main campus, 95 percent of their peers’ average at the UA, and at 87 percent of their peers’ average at NAU.

Individual peer institutions for the three campuses, and each of their all-ranks average salaries for the 2002-2003 academic year, are listed in Table 1 on page 3. Salaries are as reported in the American Association of University Professors annual report on the economic status of the profession for 2002-03. This survey reports data for 2,635 institutions (and a total of 3,239 separate campuses) of higher education in the United States.
